In 2012 Thabo Bester murdered a Johannesburg model and car saleswoman Nomfundo Tyhulu at a B&B. He stabbed her and the morning after, he told the stuff that Nomfundo was sleeping did not want to be disturbed.
He was caught and In 2012 and was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Western Cape High Court, for the murder of model Nomfundo and many other crimes of rape , robbery and fraud.
On the 3rd May 2022, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) received a report from Mangaung Correctional Centre, a public-private partnership (PPP) facility contracted to Bloemfontein Correctional Contracts, operated by G4S, indicating that the offender Thabo Bester committed suicide by setting himself alight in his cell at about 3:25 AM. This incident attracted media attention and it was confirmed to various media houses as received from G4S.
A post-mortem conducted on the body that burnt beyond recognition in Cell 35 at Mangaung Correctional Centre, revealed that it was an adult male with blunt force trauma to his head.
The postmortem report further revealed that there were no signs of smoke inhalation in his body. Furthermore, it uncovered that that pancreas and the spleen in the body were in the early stages of decomposition. Over and above that, the DNA of the deceased was not a match with the mother of Bester.
Based on the these findings , a plausible conclusion would mean that the said body found was not that of Thabo Bester. This is the basis upon which the DCS investigation report concluded that Bester had escaped from lawful custody on the 3rd May 2022.
One Twitter user wrote “Correction: he didn’t escape; he was released by prison officials who assisted in the murder of the unknown guy who was later burnt. Correctional Services assisted in concealing this until the people’s power brought it to light through social media.”
Musi Maimane wrote… “We need a new minister of police immediately! Thabo Bester held livestreams from prison, faked his death, was living large in Sandton and the gvt is now asking the public to help them catch him. They showed us drones on Monday. Use that technology to catch this murderer!”
Police have urged anyone with information to please come forward and report their findings to their nearest police stations.
